i'm really pleased with my Citroen Xsara Picasso, economic, comfortable and roomy.
I would recommend to re-site this question to the motor section, you will get a better selection of answers, and some will be quite knowledgeable.
Most makes of car have a diesel engined version, I've had Volvos for years now always diesels and you get more miles to the gallon and less maintenance required on the engine. Just remember to change the oil regularly.
