How long is your commute to work?!

Question: Would you drive further to work (say an hour each way) to live in a nicer place or is it not worthwhile? We are thinking of buying near the beach but it would take my husband and hour each way to get to work JUST so we could see the beach. Would we be better off to buy a house closer to work and family and then just drive further to get to the beach? Beach views from our balcony vs time saved driving to work, which do we pick and why?

I work with my housemate, and we take it in turns to drive to work. It only takes 15 minutes down the freeway!

I like living close to things. Living where I am now, really close to the city is extremely convenient for me and I dont think I could go back to living too far away in the 'burbs!

about a 20 min walk, or a 2 minite drive

45 minute drive.

about 30 minutes on the train...

I live 3.5 miles from work. Takes about 10 minutes to get there because of the lights, but I couldn't imagine living farther away. I'm not a commuter, would drive me nuts to have to travel hours or sit in traffic. The beach is my favorite place and I would love to live near one, but if it meant I'd have to commute to work, I'd pass.

I drive an hour one way each day in Houston traffic. An hour is no big deal after a while. I actually enjoy it most days. Provided no idiots cut me off or ride the left lane while driving in reverse. Listen to NPR on the ride, you will get hooked after a while. I highly recommend this to all republicans.

Yea, I take public transportation and I think it is the worst in time travel but it saves you a bundle on gas money.

8 blocks...I'm lucky!

I only live about 5 miles from my job, but because of the traffic it takes me about 15-20 minutes to get there. It's not a long drive by any means, but I think I'd drive the hour just to be able to get to a place on the beach every night. Yet, you didn't say what beach or state your in. That could mean all the difference in the world.

Four miles from my driveway to the parking lot, it takes 10 minutes,

It is soooo NOT worth it! I have commuted for nine years. It is a 55 mile trip that takes 1-1/2 to 2 hours, sometimes longer, due to especially heavy traffic. That is 3-4 hours of my life each day sitting in a car. It slowly starts to wear you down physically and emotionally, not to mention the value of your time (with family, relaxation, etc). If you have ever heard the story about the cooked frog, it is kind of like that. When you put a frog in a pot of cold water and turn on the flame. The temperature slowly goes up and the frog doesn't have a clue until it is too late and he is cooked. A commute has a slow effect like that, especially if the commute is so lengthy because of heavy traffic.

I have lived 5 minutes from work for the past 30 years. Before that, I had to commute as much as an hour. I absolutely hated it. Not only was it expensive and time consuming, but I lost so much energy and family time. Can a view of the beach compensate you for lost time with your loved ones? No way! Don't waste years of your life sitting alone in the car, when you could be sitting with the most important people in your life. When we eventually leave this world, the only thing that lives on here is our investment in others - because that caring example will be emulated and passed on to future generations.

1HR 15MINS

45 minutes..one way
