Does anyone else find the Japanese work ethic to be WAY out of line?!

Question: I work for a Japanese company and it just amazes me at how important work is to Japanese people. They work about 12 hours a day and everything in their worlds is secondary to work for them (often their families and certainly their health).

I am a bit of a workaholic myself, but that Japanese work ethic is insane. I work in order to live, I don't live to work!!!

it is a sad sad existence

wait.. why?

sounds very efficient

Yep, its crazy

That is how it used to be in the States about 60 years ago. The Japanese have always had a very focused view about honor. You can't get more dedicated to your work than a Samurai.

That's just how they are raised to believe. Their country instills it in them to be robot-like. Sad, but true. They're a very smart culture, but there is more to life than work.

stupid pointless waste of a life in my opinion

im sure not all japanese people are like that, im sure they have some cool, chilled people over there too

They just have a dedication to anything they do. They wouldn't dare do something less than what they are capable of.
Go to any Japanese Restaurant and it could be so busy with such large orders, but all the orders are correct and fast and efficiently placed into a bag. Go to any McDonalds and order a small coke, medium fry and cheeseburger and you get a medium coke, cheeseburger and Oops! they forgot your fries and you already drove off.
I love the Asian work ethic!

that's why they succeeded in economic growth

According to the OECD survey, Japanese and Americans work about 1,800 hours in a year while Europe countries are 1,400 hours (German) to 1,700 hours (British). And 28% of the Japanese work more than 50 hours a week (US 20%, German 5%). Other survey shows Japanese/US manufactuer workers work about 2,000 hours a year and UK workers 1,900 hours. So what you found is somewhat true but workaholic is not only in Japanese.
