For most of us never really grow up or mature all that much -- we simply grow taller and learn how to hide better. We laugh less, play less and wear uncomfortable disguises like adults, but beneath the costume is the child we always are, whose needs are simple, whose daily life is still best described by fairy tales.

It is generally true, but there are exceptions.
Our genetic wiring and cultural environment usually ensure that we don't stray too far even once we become adults. That's also the reason we (at least I) tend to have the same struggles repeatedly. We are who we are.
I have some friends who came from virtually nothing who are now very impressive and intimidate others. I just laugh because they are underneath the same people they once were, but only those of us who "knew them when" can see it.
However, there is a very small minority of people who genuinely change dramatically. Sometimes for the better, but most times for the worse.
Occasionally, there are people that you grew up with who you would never, ever recognize, even after spending considerable time with them. Sometimes it's good, but not usually.
