I think it's just something to say to seem interested. It fills the void of not knowing what to say.
They are just bored most likely.
I think people are bored and really don't care.

most of time i am betting they are bored. I do enjoy finding out what state everyone is from in a game room. I still think its neat when there are people from all of the US or the world together in a room. But personally I could care less what their age or sex is.
I think that sometimes it is interesting fun to find out where people live. I had an email from a person in India the other after mentioning a movie....
It would be cool to find out if somone lived by you, or if they were someone you know in real life.
