Question: the say the top contributers have "way too much time on their hands", when the people that insult are the ones spending way too much time insulting!!

Simply put, it is much easier to shoot at the top contributors simply because they are... easier to shoot at. It does not take a lot of time and effort to target the top tier in any arena because they are they ones leading the charge with the largest profile. Think about it, who wants to make snide remarks about Jeff EveryMan when they can take much easier and "splashier" shots at Tiffany Terrific (names have been changed to protect the innocent)?
Unfortunately, if you plan on sticking your head up to be heard... be prepared to have it shot off. (I'm ducking now)
