Greatest ever? That's too subjective to decide, whatever floats your boat is fine by me. But...he was one of greats..imagine where he would have gone if he'd had the longevity of, say, Clapton, Santana etc. Also you have to decide what makes a great guitarist, technically proficient? innovative? actually knows his place in the band? and a 1000 other reasons. Different guitarists for different situations.

However, Hendrix did pave the way for the many of the people suggested as the greatest named in the responses here.

If you want great guitarists, nobody's mentioned Lonnie Johnson, Django Reinhardt, and a host of others.

You can have your personal greatest, don't mind that at all. LOL

I don't think he was either. I have Carlos Santana and B.B. King on my last!

I don't

over rated blues singer

i think slash is better

Because he died a drug related death when he was twenty-seven and mocked the star spangled banner by scratching it on his electric guitar.

Jimmy Page. Nuff Said.

Stevie Ray Vaughan is the best ever and most underrated.

what you fail to see is that he was before his time, with out him would there be Great guitar players now the guy shown the way he allowed people to develop, you have to respect innovators

I don't

Carulli or Giuliani would have wiped the floor with him.

hendrix was ok but how good was he without all the noise and gadgets?

Not according to Guitar Hero III, I am.

Have you ever heard Buck Owens pickin & grinnin

be quiet, there int a 'best ever'

I don't think he was. Listen to Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Malcolm Jones, and Gary Moore. There are maybe a few others, but there you go.

How can you compare one style to another? Hank marvin, Careras, Brian May, that Flamenco guy whose name I can never remember, let alone pronounce, Steve Vai, Slash, Hendrix, loads of classically trained guys nobody's ever heard of...

You've hit the nail on the head, though - it was Hendrix's innovative approach and in-your-face delivery that stood him out. Once people get that legendary status, it becomes sacriligious to suggest that things have moved on in whatever field.

Like with Pele and George Best. You'd get harangued silly if you tried suggesting that the likes of Ronaldinho, Kaka, Christiano Ronaldo, Riquelme etc. were actually better players... but they're faster, stronger and fitter and have developed new skills since the 70s.

It was reported once that Eric Clapton when to see Hendrix in concert. After the concert he said he was going home to practise.Speaks for itself doesn't it?

You are right to have your own opinions. I'm not sure that "stupid morons" helps your case.
I'm not sure that a "stupid popularity contest" does either.
He was very good as a guitarist, and had many fans.
That made him very popular. I'm not sure there was a contest.
However, perhaps you could expand and tell us why you dislike him and his style so much. Even perhaps, suggest a few of your own favourites so that we may discuss their merits. What do you think?
Or, you might be inarticulate fool that you sound like.
