Hi JO
It is not that only women do it. Mostly men do it. They give poison mixed with milk to kill the girl babies.
It is because they think that raising a girl baby is costly and no use. For ex. a boy can help in doing family work like farming. Moreover they must give dowry when the girl is married.
The parents must keep the girl in good condition, like adorning her with jewels. If not so, the family is considered bad. Too avoid all these expenses they like to have a boy instead of a girl.
In India, many privately organised projects and the government too is trying to stop this insane practise.

do you have a source for this information?
a link?

UPDATE: ok, but in order to toss this stuff out for speculation, you really need to have a link,......

i agree with the other answerer...where is your evidence to support this? i thought baby girls in China were killed.

because they think they're not good for anything. they cannot give them an education, so to them it is just another mouth to feed.

Firstly, you should know that not everyone does that.

Its mostly the poor or the middleclass families who tend to do this.In many parts of India the bride's family is expected to pay dowry(look it up in wiki if you don't know what it means) to the groom's family. Those who feel they can't afford dowry abort female foetuses.Thankfully this practice is gradually(VERY gradually) decreasing due to strict anti-dowry laws.

BTW,this question should have been in Society and Culture.
