I try to not ever "tell" someone to do something. It's their life after all isn't it? But if they are asking me, I'll offer suggestions. But everything is said with a great deal of love and caring. It's up to the to decide if that works for them or not.
It depends on my answer. For example if I tell a kid to do their own homework it is a mixed reaction. If I give a smart backside answer then I usually get no response.
