At 46 years, my take is that your imagination is limited by your knowledge and experiences. Our expectations are set based on many factors but are further limited by our imagination (again a function of knowledge and experiences). So, for me, as I learn more (breadth and depth) and push myself to 'experience' more, my definition of the "meaning of life" continues to change..evolve would be a better way to say it.

As I am traveling throughout the world more now, I can see that the societal influences (the midwest U.S.) are just that...what I grew up with! I have been moved by the beliefs of Asians, SE Asia, Middle East, Mexico, Central and South America to name a few.

I've also become very interested in history of the Europe, and Great Conquerors of the last 1000 years, for example. From this I can see the much larger context of life both as it is today and how we can to this place in time.

This has helped me to better understand religion - where it came from, the conflicts of today, etc. The situation of our world today has been repeated several times in the last 1000 years - significant changes to fundamental beliefs then a settling in period (where they are distributed throughout the world), then change boils up again. Often the change is stimulated by technological changes for example. Not just computer chips but things like gun powder, fossil fuel engines, etc.

So, getting back to the meaning of life, my answer to you is that the "journey" is the reward in this life - discovery, insight, learning, understanding, and, most of all, experiencing it!!!

When our energy returns to the cosmos upon death, I do not know of this place. I do believe that there is much more than we can see with our physical eye or measure with our sciences. This is where I have developed a 'personal' definition of "God".

This is where knowledge and experience play again...they drive your search for understanding so that you can discover your own deeply personal definition of God. Indeed it will likely change over time as your journey brings clarity to the deeper and deeper questions that span time and place.

As a child I was raised Methodist, and changed to Catholocism as an adult. I've moved away from my practices as a Catholic as I've learned more of its history and how it came to be so popular. This is not a good story at all. There was no divinity. The crusades took a brutal toll on life - hardly a religion of God. I also moved to understand the premises of the other major religions. I learned that all of the 7 major religions came from the same place and time. None of them were written for thousands of years and some took much longer. My recommendation for you is to look at the premises of Buddha and Karma. Here they speak to the total lifecycle of your spirit. This is entirely an different orientation to the Catholic premise and certainly mainstream midwest U.S. I don't know your situation but perhaps this applies. Again, knowledge and experience...

Focus on the process of discovery and not on an answer that you suppose to be absolute...there simply isn't one. Your rewards come from kindness, love, compassion, etc. Understanding vs. judgement is key to discovery.

All the best to you!

Get rid of all bitterness, all passion and anger, harsh words, slander
and malice of every kind. In place of these, be kind to one another,
compassionate, and mutually forgiving, just as God has forgiven you. Do
nothing to sadden the Holy Spirit with whom you will be sealed for your day
of redemption

Rather, encourage one another. Live in
harmony and peace with one another, and the God of love and peace will be
with you ! All of you should be like-minded, sympathetic, loving
toward one another, kindly disposed, and humble .

Can we speak of a rainbow without colors? So too, we cannot speak of life without meaning. For meaning is intrinsic to life, and every part of life is meaningful.

Nothing about life is ever wasted. Everything you do counts. Every word you speak has its affect. Every thought that passes through your mind, lives forever. Your soul is the sum total of everything you do, every word you speak, and every thought that enters your mind.

So be careful how you nurture your soul. Seek truth throughout your life. Practice being loving always. And relish everything in this world that has beauty. That is all you need to know in life. That is all there is to know in life.
