They only get the extra points if they receive a best answer otherwise the thumbs up go to waste.
Maybe, or they just have more free time. Yes, we did get 1 point for helping to rate answers before they were chosen.

Yahoo would never do such a nice thing. Now if it was about getting a violation and getting 10 points for each one of those, that's where all the points would pile up.
