What if artist didn't have music videos to rely on?!

Question: An interesting question was posed to me today....

Do you think acts like Madonna, Britney Spears, New Kids on the Block (and other such groups who had heavy rotation on MTV but very little substance to their music.) would enjoy the level of success they have/had...if they only had the radio, albums and concerts to rely on?

On the flip side....do you think artists like Bob Dylan, The Ramones, AC/DC and other bands that aren't as "camera friendly" ....would be as huge as they are if they had to rely on videos the way that artists rely on that medium today?

How big of an impact do you believe appearances have on the success or failure of musicians and artists today?

In answer to your first question, I very much doubt it. They don't have variety shows on TV any more as they did years ago, so without videos etc. they wouldn't get the publicity they have gained. Also, I wonder how many artists actually sing live at concerts?

I don't think Bob Dylan etc. would be as huge as they are if they had to rely on videos, because they wouldn't get the opportunity to show their talent.

Unfortunately, I think too much emphasis is placed on appearance of musicians and artists today, as in all walks of life. So, I think appearances have a very big impact on their success or failure. Sad, but true. Interesting questions!

Video killed the radio star. And vice versa. Radio killed the video star.

Some artists make good music, i'd listen to it with no video but yeah most of them would fry

No, it changed the industry completely...they can hide their voices with the videos

I think music videos are a big factor for pop/rap artists considering MTV and VH1.

If there weren't music videos then there would not be any main stream music. Which is a good thing because people would then have to find there own type of music and not what ever MTV plays. I listen to Metal and I get sick of hearing all these stupid Rap songs. IRON MAIDEN /m\

It's bands like The Ramones, Pink Floyd, and other rock bands who have done little to no videos that have more music credibility to me.

Bubblegum music(britney, boy bands, etc.) is like warm water on a 90 degree day...Worthless.

first i'd like to say i disagree with your inclusion of madonna with the first group. differences of opinion aside, i think there are some groups who would've done well with or without video. there were a lot of crap bands and solo artists before video, and looks still played a large part in album sales for mainstream music. there were album covers and live appearences to consider. music has always been a largely commercial entity, but there's always some great stuff in there as well.

The music industry would be really different.

in my opinion, the artists don't use their three minutes to be impressive very well. they just go as slutty, or as stupid as they can be. some bands though, make an impressive video; they show themselves, have maybe a storyline, interesting place, etc.
