Is calling people by their last name Rude?!

Question: an 11th grade english teacher said it is.

Answers: an 11th grade english teacher said it is.

Depends on who you're calling by their last name. Colleagues (same level as yourself) and underlings are okay to call by last names, but don't call the boss (or the teacher, or any superior) by the last name alone.

Not to me.

No. Suppose there's a class with 5 John's in it - why call out "John" and get five "What's" when it can be simplified?

no, that shows respect. People used to be taught to call your elders by their last name

Not at all!!! Its kinda cool

I dont think so, sometimes I rather would be

I Don't Think So, Me And My Friends Play Like That All The Time

No. Best buds do it alot.

i disagree

Well, that is how you are addressed in the military so I will say no.

No, to me it sounds..... competitive. I don't know why.

No it is not. In my profession for many years your last name was the only name used.

Actually for some people it is. I don't get why it would be but a lot of peopke get offended by it.

Not if you're in the military. And, like someone else said, it can be helpful when you have a unique last name and a very common first name. A room full of five Jennifer's or Crystal's can get confusing.

i don't think so. at my brothers school most of the guys got called by their last names by teachers and peers, and I prefer it when guys call me by my last name.

don't know why... acceptance, I suppose.

It depends. From where I came from that's not rude at all especially if the two of you had just met. It is actually rude in my culture to call somebody by their first name or nicknames if you're not real close to each other yet.

no it could be odd in certain situations but mostly its viewed as respectful

Your 11th grade english teacher is probably a stuffed shirt.

No,I did that with ex-boyfriends since two of them had really been in the military. They did the same to me in jest. Just as long as I didn't call them tiny d***, then I'm sure they were fine.

not necessarily, it depends on what the name the said person was using when you were introduced to them.

i remember in 1st grade i went to a private school they used to call us by our last names. i guess we were too young for that therefore i think young people should be adressed by their first names as to 11th graders..it's an okay thing to do. that's when we comprehend more and start seeing it as more of a "grown up thing"

It depends on the situation. It would be rude to call your teacher by just her last name, but kids often make nicknames for each other based on their last names. The kids call my daughter Ozzie (not too hard to guess the last name, huh?). I know a lot of cops who call each other by last name.

no..

No she's stupid. Athletes, military, cops, and others do it, so that teacher is whack. Slap her for me then tell her that's rude.

ya ofcorse man..

No, It's actually a way of being respectful or why it's the reason teachers make you call them by their last name.
