STOP! ... Sponge Bob Square pants is the coolest cat this side of "Bikin Bottom" and I was seriously not aware of these rumblings, so thank you for bringing it to my attention. My boys love... absolutely LOVE Sponge Bob, so I feel oblugated to add my two cents.
Sponge Bob is NOT gay OR straight for that matter. Rather, Mr. Square Pants exists in a world where sex and sexuality does not come into play at all -it simply does not exist. I mean... SERIOUSLY -lets hope our culture can leave this innocent, and hilarious cartoon character out of our collective gutter mind...
What Sponge Bob is, is a man, or I'm sorry, a sponge of duty and commitment. He is committed to his friends, and job like no other. He's got an incredible work ethic, he's creative, and an all around positive, upbeat character with an awesome imagination and a killer sense of humor.
He's the most popular character in my house, and man, I really, really hope some gutter mind ninkompoops don't make me have to pre-maturely explain homosexuality to my four year old through rumors about his beloved Sponge Bob...

I think he is gay. My mother loves spongebob. She doesn't watch the shows, she just likes all of his decorations and toys, and comforters, and so forth. She has a guest room that has nothng but spongebob decorated everywhere. Actually, she's the one that mentioned spongebob was probably gay even though she likes his decorations. I thought that was so funny!!! He does show some tendicies.
