They are real, however I've heard that they tell them to take it up a notch for entertainment purposes.So essentially they are both, real people with real problems just acting a bit to keep the ratings up.

i know some people from college that would go and get paid for their "stories" they would make up these crazy kokimamie hair-brained stories (perfect for jerry) and would get paid $275 to go on. then they'd do someother crazy story and go on ricky lake (member her)- so i thinks its a bit of both
