the word soap first originated from 1876 when speakers
in public would stand on a box to speak outloud
often referred to as a soap box the word opera
means that the drama is an act of beauty signifying
the art of drama

soap opera an act of drama sent to the masses aka tv
While soaps themselves have complicated stories involving romance, betrayal, and dark family secrets, the story behind the term "soap opera" is simple and squeaky clean.
In the 1920s, radio was booming, and broadcasters wanted to get advertisers in on the act to increase their station's profits. So radio stations convinced businesses that sold household goods to sponsor radio shows. To appeal to the main consumers of these items -- female homemakers -- the radio stations created the daytime serial drama format. The first radio soap opera ran in Chicago and was sponsored by a margarine company.

Soon, all the networks had serials aimed at women, and companies selling cleaners and food products rushed to sponsor the shows. For example, Proctor & Gamble's Oxydol soap powder sponsored a popular serial drama in 1933. By 1939 the press started calling the shows "soap operas" because so many were sponsored by soap manufacturers. "Opera" had already been used in a non-musical sense in the '20s with "horse opera," which described Western movies.

Soaps moved from radio to TV along with most entertainment forms in the 1950s. Despite the intervention of evil twins, presumed-dead spouses, vengeful lovers, and the occasional vampire, soap operas have been going strong ever since.
yeah but it's like a novel....but still dont see the point in calling it a soap opera
So it has nothing to do with soap of any kind either
LMAO!
I guess for the same reason they call me to breakfast at the
"Crack of Dawn"

:)
Well, opera really just means "work" in Italian, right? As in a work of art? So maybe soap opera just refers to the TV works sponsored [formerly] by soap.

I could be talking out of my @$$, though :-p Hopefully not.
opera's are dramatic. so i see the similarity there. but soap is clean and neccesary...thats where the similarities end :/
for the same reason greenhouses are not green
there is also very rarely any soap.
Soap operas are called such because when soap operas first got started they were sponsored by the soap companies to promote their soap to viewers. That is the whole purpose of television programing and radio programing. They air songs and television sitcoms to promote comercials. With soap operas it was the soap companies wanting to get exposure with the housewives that were normally at home doing chores. : )
I think it's somthing to do with what they used to call a "kitchen sink drama" which were plays or radio dramas about everyday life - soap (kitchen sink) opera (drama)
"Soap operas" r TV dramas that were sponsored by detergent products. I know that the CBS soaps "Guiding Light" and "As the World Turns" are produced by Proctor & Gamble Productions. Incidentally, the ABC soap "One Life to Live" did feature a few musical episodes from a few months ago.
I think the soap comes from the fact that they all have a hospital story line...gotta wash those hands.
The opera is because...umm...sometimes there is a fat lady?
CRAP.......................................
Back in the day long term stories were called soaps. That was in the radio era. Because the major sponsor was Procter and Gamble. It's like asking for a Coke, you expect a soda not so much a "Coke". Times have changed but the term Soap Opra has remained. Now there are terms such as Horse Opera (westerns) and Space Operas (as in Star Wars). It's a long never ending story.
brilliant. just brilliant.

(confused? I love questions that make you think something is stupid.)
You finally made a monkey out of me....Dr Zeus Dr Zeus
Oh, I know the answer of this one!! I've studied it in my British Civilization book!lol! it is called Soap Opera for 2 reasons. Soap because a soap sponsored this kind of tv series when they started on tv and Opera because there is always so much drama, so many problems, so much crying, love stories, etc as in a real Opera concert!...Well it seems studying is worth it from time to time!! hahahahahah! have a nice day!
because they sound like they are in a bath tub coz they cant act
