Have you ever had to put a pet down (euthanasia) to end their suffering?!

Question:

Have you ever had to put a pet down (euthanasia) to end their suffering?

Our dog was misdiagnosed by one vet and it caused too much damage... the 2nd vet did all she could, but we had to put him down Friday............ I can't describe the guilt I feel even knowing we did as much as we could and that he was shutting down

I guess I just need to know if anyone else has gone thru the same

Answers: I am so sorry. I faced the same decision three weeks ago. I had to say good bye to my faithful friend of 14 years. He was a German Shepard/ doberman mix and he was my best friend. He was also the only dog I ever had, he will also be the last. I still feel guilty, even though I know that I did the right thing. My boy was old and his body was giving out on him. I feel as if I betrayed him when I brought him to the place where he was going to die. I try not to let these thoughts get the best of me. I believe that it will get better with time and with the encouragement of friends and family. I believe that he is in a better place. I loved him so much and will never forget him, I think that if he was able to talk to me he would thank me for ending his pain. He knew that he was loved, no doubt about it. I am sure that your dog knew that he was loved also. Try not to be so hard on yourself. You did the loving thing by letting him go. Give yourself permission to grieve, after all you lost a family member. God bless you in this very sad time. Source(s):
I am a life long pet parent. Yes

It had a stroke, we kept it for a while but it started lying so close to the fire it was burning its fur, and couldn't feel it. My dog Mandy had to be put down due to an inoperable genetic disorder that left her unable to use her back legs and in terrible pain. I still cry when I think about it sometimes.

You have my deepest sympathy. Yes, I've had to do it twice and it really is quite horrible. But it is what is best for the pet to end their suffering. It is really a hard thing to go through though. Yes, I have had to put one of my pets down and it is simply heartbreaking. I feel your pain and I am so sorry this has happened.

I am also active in animal rescue and have seen much abuse and had to put some animals that we tried to rescue down because they were too badly injured by their former owners. Every single time, your heart breaks just a little more... I have had to put a cat and a dog down... they were both very hard to deal with I feel your pain sadly its going to be 2 years since we put to sleep our beloved cocker spanial NIXON..he had been with us for 15 years ..he was just old and had no life in him anymore..it was the saddest moment in my life Not because of a misdiagnosis. I've had pets who were euthanized. The only thing I can say is at least they are no longer suffering. And yes, I believe animals have souls so there is a part of your beloved pet still aware and able to hear you.
Talk to him. Dogs are the least judgmental of creatures. He's not judging you. He knows you did it out of love.

I'm sorry for your loss. Yes, we had to put down our beautiful dog when he was 18 years old. He became deaf, blind, and suffered terribly from arthritis. It was so hard to do, we loved him so much. But we had to put our feelings aside and think of him. Animals don't understand pain and suffering. Benji was too good of a pet to have him in so much pain. Ending his pain was kinder than keeping him with us and watching his decline every day. Grieve for your pet, but you did the right thing for him. ...unfortunately, yes. i've had pets all my life, and some of them had to be put down to end their suffering. very tough. but all dogs go to heaven......except for the beagle i currently have that sports horns and a pitchfork..... I am deeply sorry for your loss, pets are such an important part of the family. I had to put 2 of my cats down (My 16 year old dog died on her own the day before we were to put her to sleep) My 1st cat Hazy had asthma and was on steroids for that, it made her heavy and her bones weak, she broke her back walking up the stairs on day, surgery couldn't even help. My other cat Misty I got as an older cat and her first owner feed her nothing but cheap human canned tuna in oil. She was very thin when I got her, but she became a joy! so affectionate. I fed her properly and she gained a healthy weight, but her kidneys failed from her previous diet, I had her on dialysis for a while, but it stopped working and I had to let her go. Each time it broke my heart, I still miss them, but I know it had to be done to end their silent suffering. Best of luck to you, I to carry the guilt because I could not go into the room to be with Misty, and with Hazy I was out of the country when they found out they couldn't help her anymore and my mom was with her. I don't know if it was selfish of me not being there, I just wasn't strong enough to say good-bye, they came out and handed me Misty's special collar and I just broke down, to this day that is one of my saddest memories. It is for the best, they are no longer suffering, we are the ones left behind that suffer. Again, take care and all the best! yes and it was a horriable thing to go through
