The economic and social support system of the family unit, derived originally from tribal custom. Marriage at least was a way to create order within the tribe, and assigning responsibilities within the family clusters.
Outside of marriage, and in modern terms, the only benefit is reduction of STDs. And that is even questionable. Generally speaking, our currect social and economic conditions within the USA no longer require monogamy. This of course is a relatively recent development. Less than 50 years ago, it was everybody's goal to get married.
