WTF.... Now THIS is crazy! What do you think?

The family of one of my co-workers came in today to eat lunch with him because it's his daughter's 5th birthday. I don't think I've ever wanted to slap some one as hard as I wanted to slap my co-worker when some one asked what she got for her birthday and she held up an iPod Shuffle. WTF is a freakin' FIVE YEAR OLD going to do with an iPod Shuffle?!? Hell, I'm 21 and I'm lucky to have my base-line cell phone! I had a Walkman and ONE cassett tape when I was her age and I was lucky to have that!

What do you think about kids getting such gifts at such young ages?

Mikester, she's FIVE! She just learned how to talk maybe two years ago! What the hell does she need with a damn iPod?!?

And WhyTF would I be jealous? If anything I'm pissed off! My point to this question is that kids today get everything they want and people wonder why they act so disrespectful! It's BS!

Princess Buttercup, you don't remember those cheap Walkmans that cost like $5-$10? And that cassette I had was made by my father and only had one song on each side. In '91 Walkmans were pretty cheap depending on where you got it from.

There's no way I'd buy my 5-year-old an mp3 player that costs $80+

First, Parents are way too concerned with being buddies with their kids than in being parents.
Second, the technology is raising the kids. We stick i-pods in their ears and DVD players in their faces so we don't have to talk or deal with them. Car trips now are about isolated individual in their own zone - no interaction, no people skills, no talking. Then we wonder why they don't communicate or become "distant."
Thirdly. it's all about staying entertained and keeping up with the Joneses. So now unless something is personally entertaining or self-gratifying we give it no mind. WE have taken our individuality to the point of isolation. In a world full of people and communication devices we are dying of loneliness.
