are they there just to p*ss me off and make life difficult, who do I complain to if I'm not being treated right by one of them

I hate doctors receptionists too, they are all miserable old bags and they always want to know whats wrong with you and nose into your personal business.
If I were you I would most definately get her/his name and write a letter of complaint to the surgery, specifically to your doctor or the doctor who owns the surgery.
