Is it true that students that play instruments excel academically more than students that don't?

Yes. Playing an instrument requires commitment, tons of hard work and perserverence. Those kids are more apt to learn to apply their hard work towards whatever instrument they play to school work. Kids who don't play an instrument don't know first-hand what it's like to be commited to something, and they tend to be more lazy on a school approach.
