I think it's a genre of music that lends itself well to that type of voice, but it's not always the case!. Bonnie Raitt doesn't have a particularly raspy voice, but she can definitely lay down the blues!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
In the good ole days, many blues singers performed in funky juke joints (Mississippi, Texas, etc!.) or ghetto blues bars (S & W Side Chicago, areas of St!. Louis, Dallas, Houston, Oakland CA, etc!.) !.!.!. all full of smokers!. Hence, scratchy or raspy voice!Www@Enter-QA@Com
