Why do people who sing the blues sing in a raspy voice?!

Question: Why do people who sing the blues sing in a raspy voice!?
I think it's a genre of music that lends itself well to that type of voice, but it's not always the case!. Bonnie Raitt doesn't have a particularly raspy voice, but she can definitely lay down the blues!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
