I think to be a true Hip Hop fan you need to understand the culture as well as the music!. You don't have to be "hood" to understand the culture either!. Look back and learn!. Listen to some Jazz and Blues and one of the most important criteria is intelligence!. A person should know what is being said within the lyrics and metaphors before they can call themselves a true fan of the genre!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
I think you really gotta know your stuff!. Like how hip-hop got started and stuff!. also to know a wide variety of artists!. Not necessarily like them, but just acknowledge them!. Meaning, you can't be biased towards one particular region or rapper!. You gotta have an open mind when it comes to music!. For example, you shouldn't put down every new song that comes out or whine about how the 90's are over!.

Can I just disagree with the whole question!? lol!. I don't think there is such a thing as a "perfect hip hop fan" or any critera for being a hip hop head!. Seriously!. I listen to rap all day every day, does that make me a better "fan" than a white girl from the suburbs who only likes Wanye!? Not necissarily!. She probably purchases more music than I do - I download everything, does that make me NOT a hip hop fan!? Hell to the nah!. I don't care about b-boys, djs, graffiti or any of that other funny stuff, does that make me NOT a hip hop fan!? Hell to the nah!. I still listen to rap, bottom line!. A person that likes rap is a hip hop fan, to me!. That is the ONLY criteria you need to meet!.

It would be pretentious to think that you have to like certain artists or sounds or styles just to be a fan of hip hop!.
