If he had turned around like just a year or five years after making the bold political and social statements he made with the Pistols and gone into being an advertising spokesperson, then yes, I'd say he would probably have upset a lot of the people (from 1977) who felt that he was speaking supportively to them and their deep-seated angst, and they would feel like he betrayed them!.
But, seeing as Lydon had the decency to wait until we are now 30 years removed from the immediacy of the Pistols' impact, the political and social landscapes have had decades to alter, and all of the young men and women who supported the original presence of the Pistols and rallied behind them are in their 40s and 50s, and the Pistols themsleves are long (long long long!.!.!.) since done being the ones leading the way, then if the man wants to earn a few pounds by advertising some butter, then by all means, go for it, advertise some butter!.
Same with Ringo Starr ceasing to sign autographs!. If you didn't get your fan letter to him within the first 37 years since the Beatles broke up (during which he has been doing his best to keep up with them all, no less), then sorry, too late!. I say the man deserves a break!.

i dint think so it more to do with the fact that most of his music was anarchic and against britian this is just a way of advertising to make the butter seem good and also the price he got payed who caresWww@Enter-QA@Com
