Does micing a guitar only help you when recording, or is there any way that you could hook the mic up to a PA and make the resolved sound go through their!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:

Acoustic guitars are mic'd for both recording and live, depending on the context, but live acoustic guitars usually have a pickup of some kind installed in it instead!. Acoustic guitars have a horrible tendency to feed back live with just a mic!.

Electric guitars themselves aren't mic'd, but the cabinets are!. The reasons for this are two-fold!.!.!.!. one, they sound better that way, and two, it's a lot harder to put together a rig that will sound good when plugged directly into a PA and also sound good when played without a PA!.

Get a mic, put it close to the cab's speaker (1-3" from the speaker, specifically), run it into a mixer, run the mixer into a power amp, run the power amp into the speakers!. Very simple, done all the time!. EQ especially, but compression also may be necessary to sculpt the sound and minimize feedback!.

People mic acoustic guitars so they can play louder, but I assume you mean an electric guitar!.

You can get a better tone when recording and in a live setting you can adjust the volume of the guitar and such with a mixer!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It is common to mic a guitar for both live and recording applications!.

Putting a mic on a guitar in a live setting will, of course, make the guitar louder!.

Micing up helps in recording and if you want a sound to go through a PA, just hook up your amp directly into the PA instead of micing up gives less feedback!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
