Though the best way to learn it is to read the sheet music, here are some tips:

It is in B-Flat Minor (5 flats) and is in 6/4 time, specified at a "larghetto" tempo!. In the third and fourth measures there is a run of notes which may sound like they're out of tempo, and they aren't triplets; it's a run of 11 notes in the space of 6 eighths, then 22 notes in the space of twelve!.

About a third of the way through, it will change to a D-Flat major sound for a while, until the original theme is restated!.

Here's a nice version on video:

Follow the links under related videos and you will find some more people playing it with the camera right on the keys, making it easy to see what they are doing!.

I'll stand by it: Learning to read sheet music will do amazing things to you! You can play anything without the restriction of hearing it first! I feel like it frees interpretation, too!. (Some people have an idea that people think it's more "impressive" or incredible that someone can play by ear, but to play by ear only is more of a restriction, just like those who only read sheet music and won't do any of it by ear!.)

Balance yourself by learning to read sheet music!. It's simple!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

To be honest I have to tell you the following :-
1!.It is impossible to learn such an advanced piece properly if you are only paying by ear and cannot read the music , you'll waste your time!.
2!.You have to get a professional piano teacher, for complete supervision on your performance techniques and expressions!.
3!.You must reach a certain advanced level to be able to perform this piece professionally with full technical and sound controls!.

I remember learning this piece while living in Lynwood CA in 1972, not that any of that is important!. I do remember spending quite a bit of time on measures 3 & 4!.

I do read music so knowing what notes to play was not a problem!. First I worked out a fingering for the right hand and then I practiced over and over playing the notes until I could play them without screwing up, then I worked them in over my left hand!. It did not happen instantly!.

I can not imagine attempting to pick out the notes of these two measures by ear!. You will need someone to show you the notes and how they flow with the left hand!. Every pianist plays these two measures slightly different!.

With this piece, I think you can take your five minute theory to learn a piece of music and toss it out the window, it ain't going to happen, but if you do learn it in five minutes please post it on Youtube and call it the five minute nocturne!. I will be looking for it!.

Since I have been involved with this Yahoo Answers sight, I am amazed how many people are asking for short-cuts to learning music!.
If you want to play this Nocturne the way Chopin wrote it, start by taking lessons from a qualified teacher, learn to read music and work your way up until you are ready to tackle it!. There are no short cuts to Chopin!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
