It depends on the person!.
Some people look for lyrics!. They look for songs with heartfelt lyrics, or sad lyrics, or whatever happens to fit their mood at the moment!.
Some people look for tune!. If it has a catchy tune, they like it!. If it's in the genre of music they like, they'll usually like it!.
Some people look for songs they can sing along to!. Songs within their voice range that have easy notes to hit and understandable lyrics!.
Some people look for songs they can play along with on an instrument - usually guitar or piano, although they can use any instrument, really!.
I kind of look for a combination!. If I'm feeling a powerful emotion, I look for the lyrics!. If I'm bored, I look for something with an exciting and catchy tune!. If I want to practice my singing or instrument playing, I look for an easy song to sing along or play along with!.

To me, a song has 3 parts to it, all are equally important; Music (the melody), Lyrics, and the Singer!. If a song as all three of those I'm most likely to like it a lot, but in some cases I can handle having only two of those, example: Having only the Melody and good Singer can be cool, the lyrics aren't always mandatory but make a song even more likable!. But if I can't stand the singers voice I usually don't last even to the Chorus!. Usually also, I stay with the song if the Music makes me want to get up and dance, that makes it quite important to me to!

I don't agree that it is always the lyrics!. The melody is the most important!. How many people can sing a song all the way through knowing all the lyrics unless their singing it with the radio!? If the song has a catchy chorus and the lyrics are easy to remember then that song will be the most popular!. Most people don't remember the lyrics other than the chorus!.
If your at work or school or driving and you have this song that you can't get the tune out of your head then it's more than likely going to be a hit!. Here's an example!. "I will always love you" written by Dolley Pardon made most popular by Whitney Houston!. Do you know all the lyrics to that song!? i usually like songs that i can sing along too whether they are really loud or soft pop i mainly like it depending on the lyrics and if i relate to them!. also i usually start liking a song after i have heard it for a while when it usually is not in style anymore thats kinda funny cuz it makes me like oldies songs lol but i like mostly for thr rhythm and lyrics and instrumentation cuz some songs sound amazing without having chorus or lyricsWww@Enter-QA@Com

i like songs that are unique and memorable!. the singer has to have a good voice, the band members have to be talented (a lot of bands have no talent) and it helps if u can relate!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

normally the beat sometimes they like the message or the rhyming of words, heck some even like the singer him/her self!
