Is there a lack of respect for classical music in our generation?!

Question: Is there a lack of respect for classical music in our generation!?
It seems to me that people these days don't have any respect for classical music!. At least my generation!. In my school, everyone listens to rap, pop, country, etc!. Which is okay, except they regard classical music as gay!? Anyone here agree, and what can we do to influence others to enjoy more classical music!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

I have (had) many friends who don't listen to classical music - of course, they wouldn't dare say offensive things about it to my face :)

What I do about them is: I try to introduce them to classical music by playing them something I know they'll like - for some it's Clair de lune, for some it's Pictures in an Exhibition (with explanations, I tell them about each painting), for some it's The Nutcracker (again, with additional story telling), and so on!.

Then some of them ask me for recordings to listen to, and even ask me to take them with me when I know there's gonna be a good concert!. And some don't!.!.!. Still, it's worth the effort!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Well, people who say classical music is "gay," meaning dumb or stupid, are ignorant!.

I think the problem is that kids do not know how to listen to classical!. Pop songs are easy to listen to because they are easy to understand!. That's also the reason classical pieces like "Fur Elise" and Strauss waltzes are still popular !.!.!. because they are easy to listen to and understand!. Movements of symphonies go on for a while, some lasting over half an hour (Mahler 3)!. What kid is going to sit down and listen to a classical music piece that lasts so long, when they could listen to a two-and-a-half minute pop song and then go play XBox!?

also, I think this may only be true for American kids!. Some don't listen to classical music, songs, or opera because they only know one language: English!. Most of the great classical music with voices or choir are sung in German, French, Italian or Latin!. So, there is also the language barrier!.

In order for kids to appreciate classical music, I think it would be beneficial to teach them certain classical structures (like sonata form, or rondo, or binary and ternary)!. also, they should be taught composer biographies and they should be taught how a piece works as a historical document!. For example, Beethoven's Third Sympony is already a great piece, but it becomes even more interesting when one learns it was written with Napolean Bonaparte in mind as the hero!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think there is a general lack of interest among many in the public, however, there is still a decent population that enjoys it!.

I feel that education and compromise are needed to promote classical music among others!. That is why I try to give lecture recitals (I am a pianist)!. I keep the lecture as accessible as possible to the general public, and I try to program a nice balance of artistic and easily enjoyable and recognizable music!.

People that call classical music "gay" are just closed-minded, in more ways than one!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I cannot speak for your generation, but there is no lack of respect in mine!. There is among classical music enthusiasts, a lack of respect for some of the modern genres - but that may be warranted!.
Some people do not come to appreciate classical til later in life, when they are perhaps wiser, have more expirience of life and are less inclined to latch onto the latest crap they are sold by the music biz!. Modern music is so transient - especially pop!. It has a half life of about two weeks!. Then it is forgotten!.!.!. and rightly so!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Classical music has survived many generations!. People today still pay money to see operas, symphonies, recitals, etc!. of the great composers from the past 400 years!. Your generation will be no different from the last and the many before them!. When you're young (I do remember) you want to understand things quick and easy with no time wasted!. The music that appeals to them is made quick and easy (unfortunately, with money on the minds of those creating it)!. The great composers of the past created music that required thought and time, and, for the love of the art!. It's hard for young people to relate to classical music because, thought and time need to be devoted in order to enjoy it!. As you're generation ages, they will slow down a bit to see how amazing classical music is!. I used to love all those bands in the 90's Snoop, 2 Pac, Sublime, Tool, Pearl Jam, etc!. you name them I had their album!. I still think they're bad *** but it was necessary to broaden my horizons so to speak with classical music!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

I absolutely love classical music and I'm only fifteen!. Unfortunately when young people hear the words classical music they think of snobs and over-acheivers!. The majority of teenagers definitley prefer rap and hip-hop to classical music, but taste changes over time!. Who knows!? Maybe the teenagers that listen to P Diddy and Britney Spears now will be listening to Debussy and Mozart in a few years!. I'm a very open minded person so I like to listen to a variety!. But I guess everyone just likes what they like!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It isn't a trend, it was always as you describe!.
I am old enough to be your grandfather, and when I went to school, my classmates thought I was from Squaresville!.

I remember one of my classmates telling the music appreciation teacher, "When we are adults, classical music will be dead!." The music appreciation teacher said, "That's what every generation said!." Www@Enter-QA@Com

Hun, im in your generation, and there isnt anything you can do to make me like classical music!. i even play clarinet and piano, and i hate it! dont try to change us, let us be who we are!. you can listen to your classical, and we will listen to rock or whatever we like!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

people like what they like!. It doesn't really matter what people think of your choices!. Classical music is not very popular with teenagers but I love it!. (although, i'm far from a teenager)!. Do you play a musical instrument!? I've found that people who are more musically talented enjoy it more!. IMOWww@Enter-QA@Com

Well I do kind of agree with you, classical music is beautiful and always will be, but like all past music it lost its popularity!. Music changes and grows over time and eventually certain genres are forgotten!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Agree!. 1000%

Classical music is really "music" pre se!. Everything else is an adulteration of that, in IMHOWww@Enter-QA@Com

Yes, there is but there are people out there that enjoy it!.
