Never really appreciated classical music until now... suggestions for listening?!

Question: Never really appreciated classical music until now!.!.!. suggestions for listening!?
I enjoy classical music but don't know much about it!. Do you have any recommendations for me to begin with (to listen to)!? Naming some composers and your favorite works would help me greatly!. I've heard of Mozart and Beethoven and Bach but never really delved into their works!. Links would be appreciated!. If it helps any, I am enjoying Dvorak's New World Symphony (particularly the second movement):

I love lists!.

1!. Bach!. The Passions, Art of Fugue and the Partitas for violin are excellent to dive deeper into the genius that was/is Bach!.

2!. Mozart!. Need we say more about his symphonies!? My favourites are No!. 29, 40 and 41!. Do not forget about his Requiem!.

3!. Beethoven's sonatas such as Appassionata Sonata (technically known as Piano Sonata No!. 23 in F minor, opus 57) are also wonderful works to start from!.

4!. Vivaldi did not only compose The Four Seasons!. You should look out for his guitar, lute and other violin concertos!. I can't name them all because he wrote 500+ concertos and other types of works!. The music historians are still discovering his works as I write this down!.

5!. Tchaikovsky's Symphonies are also wonderful!. Get a recording for Symphony No 4 and 6!.

6!. Richard Strauss!. Not the waltz king, mind you!. Take a bite out of Alsa Sprach Zarathustra, the one-act-opera Salome (there's a strip scene, in case that's your cup of beer), and the Don Quixote variations!.

7!. Mendelssohn's Violin concerto, Symphonies Nos 3 and 4 and the excellent Hebrides Overture are pure Romantic Period!.

That's it for you for starters!. You'll find the rest on your own!. Self-discovery is more fun than having others to point the way!. It's almost restrictive!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Youtube is a wonderful place to listen to and get familiar with the different composers and their works!.

Classical music covers a large variety of styles and periods!. I have been listening to classical music for over 50 years and I have to admit there are some aspects of it that I have never warmed up to!. The piano is my favorite instrument!. Give me a solo piano or a piano and orchestra and I am happy, but I do not want to hear a piano in a chamber music composition!. Horns are great in a symphony, but I do not want sit thru a horn concerto!.

Pick your favorite instruments and listen to pieces written for them!. The New World Symphony is a giant among symphonies!. The 2nd movement theme was used in a popular song years ago!. Keep listening to all of the movements and they will grow on you!. Since you are already listening to Dvorak, you might try some of his Slavonic Dances!. They are not as heavy as his symphonies but make for enjoyable listening Www@Enter-QA@Com

Seeing as everyone else is going to give you the classical and romantic composers, here's a list of more modern ones!.

Debussy - writing at the end of the 19th century, Debussy introduced a new approach to harmony which strayed away from conventional chords!. Claire de Lune is probably his most famous piece, "prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune" is very beautiful, and "la mer" is very evocative!.

Erik Satie - another French composer writing at the turn of the last century, Satie referred to himself as a "sound artist" rather than a musician!. Having said that many of his pieces have a large element of the Romantic about them!. "Cinema" is a very interesting piece of his, featuring lots of repetitive disjointed phrases!. His most famous pieces are the "Gnossiennes" and the "Gymnopedies"!.

Igor Stravinksy - writing mostly in the first half of the 20th century, Stravinsky was highly influential in changing composer's ideas of rhythm, and in bringing Russian compositional techniques to the West!. His "rite of spring" caused a riot when first performed, and is viewed as one of the greatest pieces of the 20th century!.

Gian Carlo Menotti - probably not particularly great, but his opera "the medium" is one of my favourite operas!.

George Gershwin - a contentious one this, there are many who would say Gershwin was a jazz composer, however I think that because at least some of his music was entirely notated he was at least partially classical!. Gershwin took huge influece from the jazz idiom, as can be heard in many of his pieces such as his "preludes" and "rhapsody in blue"

Steve Reich - one of the first minimalists, Reich sought to do away with the inaccesibility of Schoenberg's 12 tone system and make music tonal again!. His music is highly repetitive and only changes very slowly!. His album "music for 18 musicians" is his best work in my opinion!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
