If you talked to a style coach they would tell you to work out breaks/cracks, pitch problems, support/breath control, etc!.!. first!. In other words they would say come and see me when you get done with the vocal coach!.

But assuming you have all that under control!. The first thing is your voice type has to match up!. James is a Baritone, he hits a few sweet high notes, but he also hits his share of low notes!. If you're voice sits naturally in the higher register (Tenor) then you could trash your voice trying to sing like him!. If you have that out of the way then the thing to do is to just take a few of his songs, break them down into 30 second intervals and try to mimic everything he's doing!. Every moan, growl, scream, etc!.!.!. Record your! Listen to the playback, then listen to james!. Make notes of what you hear differently then try to correct those things!. If you're hearing James do things with his voice you're not able to do, then you need to identify why that is!. Is he going outside your range!? Is he holding a note longer than you can comfortably!? If you're having those sort of issues, you need to work on techniques with your voice coach to correct support and to try and extend range (sounds like you're already doing this trying to work out your cracks)!.

Metallica has enough live material on CD that you need not go to the studio recording for comparison!. Quality live recordings are always better to work with as studio takes can consist of many vocal takes cut & pasted togeather!.!.!. A quality live recording provides a good reference for what the singer can really do when you strip away all the studio toys and give him basic EQ, compression, etc!.!.!.

Sorry, I know this isn't a great answer, hopefully I've given some perspective!.
