Question about the meaning of "x" in guitar tabs...?!

Those are basic power chords right, now what must you do regarding the x (D string)!? If it means 'don't play it' like I think it does, how do you strum without hitting that string!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

It doesn't mean 'don't play it', really!. It means mute it with your finger!. You still strum the note, but (in this case) your ring finger will lay lightly on top of the string so when you strum the three strings in question, only the two held down will sound!. similar for the other times the x occurs!. you strum the strings and lay your finger on the strings just light enough so it makes that, how do i say, click-type sound!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
Sarah's correct!.!.or!.!.!.!.you can use your first finger in the first example of 7!.!.!.X!.!.!.!.5 to lay over the "D" string to help deaden it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
it does mean don't play and this is when you use your thumb and forefinger to pinch both strings from the outside!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
