I think it's all those things and more!. I can't listen to certain songs because lots of times, when I hear songs, I associate them with different memories and times in my life!. I hear lots of songs that reminds me of ex's or times when my life wasn't going so good!.
But other than that i would say the thing that makes me sad listening to songs is the instrumental and the passion the singer puts in!. Artists can right really sad, powerful lyrics, yet have a really up-beat song!. That wouldn't make me cryWww@Enter-QA@Com

It could be all three, but i think it could also be if that person relates to the song, like through a past hurt!. Then they know that feeling that the singer feels and can relate to them, so it is so much more real!. It kinda takes them back whether it be good or bad!. Www@Enter-QA@Com
it's all of those things!. it's the connection each individual makes with the song on some personal level!. it can get you hype, make you smile, or bring a tear to your eye!. for me seal's song prayer for the dying does that to me!. but the again so does metallica's unforgiven pt2!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
I guess it kind of depends on the person!. For me its what the song makes me think of!. There are songs that are from a certain time in my life or the subject reminds me of something that has happened in my life!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

Usually the subject matter!.
Like for me, the song "tell laura I love her" by Ray Peterson makes me bawl just because it is SO sad, and the dude dies and whatnot!. That's what makes me cry!.
