Does anyone think the "grunge" label was missused for most Seattle sce!

Question: Does anyone think the "grunge" label was missused for most Seattle scene bands!?
How could bands like Nirvana, Mother Love Bone, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden etc have been thrown in the same boat!? No wonder Kurt took such offense at Pearl Jam being labeled grunge!.!.!.!.because they wern't!. Bleach had shades of grunge, but would anyone call Nevermind grunge!? It sounds like pop punk with heavy metal influences to me!.

Kurt himself said of Nirvana "All in all, I think we sound like The Knack and the Bay City Rollers being molested by Black Flag and Black Sabbath"

I agree!. The majority of bands labeled "grunge" were far from it!.

and I agree with Kurt!. That's basically what they sound like!. XDWww@Enter-QA@Com

I can't disagree with you on that!. The Seattle based bands were commonly refered to that out of sheer ignorance!. Nirvana started a fuore which put Seattle on the map (people had obviously never heard of Jimi) and needed to group it!. I was never really a fan of those bands!. I like Nevermind but I agree, is that really grunge!?

Early 1990's were my college days and the UK Indie scene was in full swing!. I was still rocking out to 'tallica's Black and the new Pantera sound but I was also chilling to The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and digging it with The Mock Turtles!.

Sorry I can't add more!.

PS!. I actually heard R!.E!.M!. refered to as Grunge in '91 *That was in regard to the Out Of Time album ie!.Losing My Religion, Maybe that's what inspired them to totally reinvent with Monster in '94!.

Just thought I'd share that!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Then, what exactly WAS grunge right!?
I think it was just a label for the style of that era, not really the music!. They probably just said everything was grunge!. just how people called everything punk!.
EDIT: I totally agree with how Amy said Nirvana was different!. It was totally unique!. I don't think it really fit a label and Kurt kind of got that too!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

yep yep I agree!
For example!.!.!.I know Blind Melon isn't from Seattle but some labeled them grunge!? How are they thrown into the category!?
also radiohead ISN'T grunge!. So many people always list them as a grunge band!Www@Enter-QA@Com

In my opinion "grunge" is just a name given to good music so they can push it in magazines then pull it off the shelves later for the next new thing!.

Kurt didn't like the term "grunge" as you mentioned!. He very much preferred themselves to be called as a New Wave band of some sort!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

i think your right, Alice and Chains and Nirvana shouldn't be lumped into the same genre, they sound nothing a likeWww@Enter-QA@Com

there is only 1 Seattle band worth listening to and that was 'Nirvana' and there were grungeWww@Enter-QA@Com

pearl jams ten honestly sounded like arena rock to me and not grunge at allWww@Enter-QA@Com

Good Thoughts Michael

I think a lot of different bands are mis-genred especially in Metal, yeah it seems if there is a Booming Genre in a certain time and new bands are coming out in that same time they sometimes get unfairly Genred or Categorized in that certain booming genre!. I agree about PJ I mean they had maybe a couple of "Grunge" overtones but they certainly deviated from the average "Grunge" Norm so did a another "Grunge" band in that time called The Gits and Mia Zapata who was unfortunately Murdered they were labeled as Grunge and they were a long the lines of Pear Jam but she died before coming up from the Seattle Underground!.

EDIT:

Nirvana was a new sound and I read a few times where Kirt called it POST-PUNK, yep a few times he called the movement POST PUNKWww@Enter-QA@Com

I agree! I don't think any of them really sound alike! I especially think Nirvana's sound was way different from the others, but they were all pretty different from each other!

edit: I also think they were all unique!. I think, though, that as far as if you were to sit down and listen to all of them, Nirvana sounded the least like the others, for one thing, I think that Nirvana seemed to have more punk influences, whereas the in the others I heard more heavy metal influences!. But, no doubt, they were all very unique and I'm a fan of all of them, (Pearl Jam less than the others, but they are ok)

and your right Nirvana definitely did NOT invent grunge! They just brought it to the mainstream!.!.!.anyone should know that, especially someone claiming to be a Nirvana fan!

haha, I was getting to it =)Www@Enter-QA@Com
