Continuing with the Russians- How many of you are familiar with Kalinnikov's!

Question: Continuing with the Russians- How many of you are familiar with Kalinnikov's symphonies!?
I love his first symphony!. It is probably in my top 50 of all time favorite symphonies!. The final movement's recapitulation of the opening themes is simply brilliant!. The second movement is also one of my favorite symphonic utterances!.

Do you agree!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
YES! I love Kalinnikov's first symphony!. It is probably in my top 10 if not 5 symphonic works (if it is even possible to compile such a list!.)

I have played the full symphony on violin, and also a band arrangement of the 4th movement on trumpet!. The band arrangement is surprisingly good, it has antiphonal brass parts that were played in the back of the hall and is with organ, which is very effective!.

Aww, now I want to listen to it, I haven't in a while!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Believe it or not, I have actually played the final movement of Kalinnikov's first symphony!. From what I have heard the final movement does recapitulate a lot of the themes from the other three movements!. The brass choir in particular in the final movement is very exciting to listen to and play!. That is all I know about it!. I have heard Kalinnikov wrote other symphonies but know nothing about them!.

I love Kallinnikov's music!. it's a tragedy tuberculosis killed him in 1901 before his 35th birthday or we might have had more wonderful music from him!. His First Symphony has always been the 'best known' of this little-known composer!. I love the cellos' second subject tune in the first movement - what a lyrical gift he had!. I also love the Second Symphony, which was the first Kallinnikov I ever heard about 35 years ago in that wonderful classic Yevgeny Svetlanov recording from 1966 - which has never been bettered to my ears!.

There are a number of other attractrive orchestral works worth investigating when you can lay your hands on them, including the symphonic poems 'Bilina', 'The Cedar and the Palm' and 'Nymphs', the Suite in B minor, the Serenade for Strings and the 2 Intermezzos!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
