Why don't bands change their names when a member leaves/dies?!

Question: Why don't bands change their names when a member leaves/dies!?
Hello!. Let me start - I love Queen!. They just put out an album - The Cosmos rock!. Taking over for Freddie is Paul Rodgers!. Zepplin are reforming w/ (rumoured) Steve Tyler!. Axl Rose calls his band, w/ no orignal members but him, Guns N Roses!.

So Question time folks, or your opion, Should bands keep their origanl names when a band member leaves/dies/gives up (thinking of Pink Floyd and poor ol' Syd Barrett)!?

For a band like Queen - couldn't they call themselves Smile - since Taylor and May formed that band before Queen - and since they are the only two members from the Queen line up!?

Whatcha think!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
i agree i think they shoudl change there name when that happens
but so many people like them
if they keep the name they keep all the good stuff that goes with it
and they still have all the fans of there older stuff even if theydidn't like there new stuff!.!. whereas if they didnt like there new stuff!.!. they wouldnt listen to them and the band wouldnt be as well known!.!. if you get what i mean!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I agree!.!.!.especially with Queen, GnR and Led Zeppelin!. I guess the reason they dont do it is
1!.They plan on performing their past material and thay want the band name to still be associated with those songs
2!.Name recognition People will buy tickets and cds if its from a band they have known, regardless of who the members are!.It eliminates a lot of marketing to promote the new band and to get their new name out thereWww@Enter-QA@Com

I think if one, maybe even two, members leave it's fine to keep the same name!. The band still has a good amount of original members!. For example, Jefferson Airplane could have stayed Jefferson Airplane after the first two left, in my opinion!. And Pink Floyd was also fine staying Pink Floyd!. But the new Guns N Roses and Queen should have different names!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I agree with the Queen and Guns n roses ones because in my opinion the Lead singer is the most important member, because when you hear that voice, you know what band it is!. That's the case with Queen!.
But GNR has only one original member, so they should change their name!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Well i think it is respectful if someone dies to change the band name, for instance my Brother died, he was the guitarist in a band called Sore Eyes for Sight!. After he died they changed the name to As it withers away!.!.they broke up anyway!.!.but i do think it is misleadin to keep the original name!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Kind of like AIC with no Layne Staley!. Kiss without Peter and Ace!. And Zepplin without Plant in which i think Robert lost his damn mind that he keeps wanting to tour with Allison Krauss!. It makes no sense and i agree they should change their names!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It would confuse the hell out of the fans if bands did that!. Take Iron Maiden for example!. It took them four albums to get a stable line-up together!. That would mean four different band names just for the first four albums!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

They don't want people to think that the band has changed!
If they changed their name, why not change the genre and everything else!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Because then bands like Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple and the like would have to have like 10 different names!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Copyright laws! It's that simple!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

I agree!.
It's a little misleading to call the band
the same name, if it's really NOT that band,
you know!? lolWww@Enter-QA@Com

oh and don't forget Jerry Cantrell reforming Alice In Chains and Journey w/ the Filipino guy

part of it (I believe) is that people recognize the name, so they will be recognizeable and can/will sell records!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.as long as there are some of the major components to the band remaining (i!.e!. a distinctive sound, important member) people will see the band

May was a big contributer to Queen, besides Freddie he was the most recognizeable member

The same thing with The Who!.!.!.!.!.the voice (Daltrey) and the creativity (Townsend) are still there so people will do see them Www@Enter-QA@Com

some do!.!.!.when Jerry Garcia (one of two people for whom a Ben & Jerry's flavour named) died, The Grateful Dead dropped "Grateful" from the name and now perform (occasionally) as The Dead!.!.!.!.also, Bob Weir has a separate band called "Rat Dog"

also, over the years, "Jefferson Airplane" became "Jefferson Starship" and then just "Starship"

but if the band is substantially the same and plays the same kind of music, then why can't they keep the name!.!.!.!.since, by your argument, The Beatles would have had to change their name when Pete Best died and Richard Starkey (Ringo Starr) became their drummer!.
(incidentally, The Beatles is at least the third name they went by, having previously been "The Quarrymen" and "The Silver Beetles" before they really took off and became well known as The BeatlesWww@Enter-QA@Com
