Answers:
Different guitarists have different styles, unless you are Katy Tunstall or Shania Twain and in which case you have no style at all!. The key to developing your own unique guitar style is to study chord progressions and scales!.
Learning to play blues or jazz will help you a great deal in developing your own style and most modern rock songs are based on blues and jazz scales!. A lot of the stuff Ritchie Blackmore played whilst in Deep Purple and Rainbow was based on stuff he had heard on Hungarian radio stations late at night!. He took the basic format and tweaked it to make up his own style!.
There are loads of DVDs out there that will give you the basics, all you have to do is take it from there!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I learnt from a chord book (self taught), but would recommend that you find a decent teacher and have some lessons, you will learn to play sooner and wont pick up to many bad habits that will limit you in the future!. I wish that I had taken lessons!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

For starters, teachers are not crap!.!.they can play, you can't!. If you want to go it alone, get a DVD and learn from that!.!.!.if you can!. Or just play around until the neighbours stop complaining!.!.!.and hopefully start cheering! Could take some time, though!Www@Enter-QA@Com

go on ultimate guitar (website, type in your favourite song, download powertab edior on download!.com, then learn it slowley then speed up, then eventually learn other stuff, make your own stuff!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Teachers aren't crap! You need to look around for a good teacher!. Cause it's really hard doing it yourself cause you don't have any structure to give to yourself and you won't know if your doing it wrong!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Go ahead and teach yourself then, but how will you know you've done it properly!? A bit of help from someone who knows what they are doing goes a long way!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Alwayse use a teacher, a good one that is, it will be really hard to play without a teacher!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
