Answers:
Yes, Influence is the main argument for people who say Tupac is the GOAT!. E-40 and the slang he uses, was influential on countless rappers and he’s had some mainstream success, but that doesn’t make him the GOAT!. Quality is the only criteria I have for being the best and that’s how it should be, I don’t keep score on how many albums you sell!. I’ll never buy that rapper A should be higher in any goat list instead of rapper B who has more skill and a better discography just because they have more mainstream success, drive a Bentley, and live in a big house!.

For example, Guru might not have been influential on the average mainstream consumer, but Gang Starr was influential and had a big impact on hip-hop itself!. So I define influential artists as having a big impact on hip-hop itself vs!. having an impact on the average mainstream consumer!.

If you had my question on Nas in mind earlier when you posted this, I agree with what you said on my question!. Nas was lucky that large professor put him on, he did all the beats, on his demo for free because he believed in him, I don’t know if any other hot producers might have went without eating like large pro did to do that!. It could have been years before we saw an illmatic or we might not have seen it at all without large pro!. What people also don’t realize is a lot of underground emcees had great albums that were supposed to be released but they were shelved due to label politics, like how J-Live’s first album was shelved for years, and it was finally released in 2001!. Nas was also lucky that he also had a guy like MC Search be the executive producer and a&r of illmatic because a lot of a&r’s might not have understood how great an album that was, and then the label might have dropped nas and had illmatic shelved and nas could have been one of these rappers that have stayed underground for years!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Influential!?

The only thing rappers influence is other rappers!. And a few wannabes, who might buy CDs and hats, and make people like Suge a nice pile of cash!.

Which is fair enough, in a sense, but they don't influence anything outside their little sphere of existence, because no-one in a position of power or authority particularly cares what they have to say!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Its an absolute requirement!. In fact it may be the most important requirment!. These are the criteria I use

Influence
Style & delivery
Lyrical content (including complexity of rhyme schemes)
Tone
Uniqueness/intangibles

Influence is pretty straight forward!. I ask these questions to myself!. Are they looked upon by their peers as being a mentor!? Do others want to emulate them!? Have they defined a new style or set a new standard in emceeing!? The most difficult question (subjective) would be has their presence in the industry advanced the state of hip hop!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

No I wouldn't say so!.!.!.umm I would say its an element, but not necessarily a requirement!. (because remember that people are able to counteract influence, hence the idea of deviance and development of personal tastes)!.
How would I descibe Influential!?!.!.!.!.!.!.!.umm I would say, anyone who is able to exert power or impact (could be either positive or negative) on the minds and behaviour of others!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Influential is paving the way for a certain amount of rappers, not a specific amount!. Influential is having an Impact on something YOU do!. Whether it be Hip Hop or Farming, It's what you love and you let people know!. Making yourself heard and giving your message out!. Starting early and building yourself up gradually and not falling off while doing so!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I'm basically agreeing with most people that have already answered!. Influence is a crucial aspect imo in GOAT conversations!.!.!.when discussing simply who's the BEST!.!.!.influence fly's right out the door!. That's where the confusion takes place for answerers like NASTY and Angel!.!.!.

GOATs - Rakim, Kool G Rap, Kool Keith, etc!.

BEST - People have of course been better!.!.!.Aceyalone, J-Live, etc!., to name a few!. Having so little influence though, drops their legacies to below that of a Rakim!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

yeah

i see influential as someone who changes/influences/develops certain aspects of hip hop!. and so they have to be original and innovative to do that which is something they should get credit for!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

Not really!.!.!.influence is important!.!.!.if they didnt impact hip hop, they cant be the Greatest Of All Time!.!.!.But most of the greats are influential in one way or another!.!.!.

@ Ant: Big Pun was really influential for the Latin rhh community!.!.!.He got people like the Beatnuts!.!.!.Cuban Link!.!.!.and even Fat Joe some shine when them dudes were struggling!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

yes

ive never understood why rakim is considered goat bc he is "influential"

obviously, in most cases the better you are, the more people will be influenced by you!.!.!.!.

but its not a negative thing if you arentWww@Enter-QA@Com

There's no problem with that but I will never buy that a 20 year Underground Vet is GOAT over anyone that been influencing countless rappers with less skills!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

to be the Goat you need the total package, influence, rhyming, and truth and meaning to your lyrics!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Yeah!.!.!.I put Big Pun in top 10, he's not influential!.!.!.at least I don't think!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

of course they can be!.!.goat means who's the best, not most influentialWww@Enter-QA@Com

Yeah!.

There are good artists who never make an impact!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

i guess if somehow their rap songs are better than every1 else's!. A good rapper has good songs, rite!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

yes because its about skill too!.!.!.!.!.but skilled rappers are allways influencial for being so good at rappingWww@Enter-QA@Com
