To answer your first question, there are not many of the "big" composer who have ever written for saxophone!. Debussy wrote his Rhapsody for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra!. Glazunov has a Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra!. Ravel, made the genius decision of using an alto saxophone to play the solo in his "The Old Castle" movement from his orchestrated version of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition!. Gershwin, with his jazz influences, used it on occasion for his classical music!. There simply aren't many very well known classical composers who have used the saxophone!.
I'd think that the biggest composer to regularly include the saxophone in his orchestrations would be John Phillip Sousa!. He recognized that the loud and bright sound of a saxophone would fit well into his marches!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
