What are your thoughts about Materialism and Hip Hop? ?!

Question: What are your thoughts about Materialism and Hip Hop!? !?
We speak about commericialism and materialism all the time as negatives, but aren't they part of the aspects of what brought Hip Hop to the forefront!?

Ex: Paid In Full is full of themes about money and getting it, the videos are also displays of big gold chains and mercedes medallions, etc!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

I see your point, even Special Ed got involved on "I got it made" back in the day, but today's artist make it a point to rub it in your face almost as if to saying "this is what it's all about, Fcuk knowledge, Information, everything, it's about getting paid!" And that's not the message that needs to be conveyed IMO!.!.!. In closing "We don't see, we don't read, we don't really need to Self-centered humans be the root of all evil
In this industry, we just feed our egos"

No not really!. Real Hip Hop and good music always manage to tell a store!. The greatest rappers and everlasting rap songs always tell a story be it about a relationship, or struggle to make it to the top!. The materialistic portion of it is just to show when they reach the top otherwise it's just done for style!. Materialism and all that are just our modern society, with talent hip hop is timeless, but today unless your wearing that designer outfit and driving that new car, odds are most people won't even give you the time of day!. you know what i realized!.!.!.

Commercial rappers = Rap about money, hoes, cars, etc
Underground Rappers = rap about smokin weed, gettin high, shyt that happens, etc

Of course there are MANY exeptions to this!. But for the most part, its pretty trueWww@Enter-QA@Com

What Duece, Jem, and Angel said!.

it's quantity over quality nowadays, and it's sad and like Lupe's song says, it really dumbs people -- especially youth/teenagers -- down and dehumanizes womenWww@Enter-QA@Com

It's outta control today!.

But Sugar Hill Gang rapped about having more money than a sucka could ever spend and "a sharp new Cadillac" and ''!.!.a color tv so I can see the Knicks play basketball"

I don't know what my point is!?!.!.but that's what came to mind!.:)Www@Enter-QA@Com

I WOULDN'T MIND IF THERE WAS also AN EQUAL DOSE OF THOUGHTFUL MUSIC IN THE MAINSTREAM BUT IT SEEMS THAT THE MATERIALISTIC MUSIC OUTWEIGHS THE COMMON'S, TALIB'S, IMMORTAL'S, ECTWww@Enter-QA@Com

The problem today is that materialism IS rap!. Great lyricists and artists don't sell anymore!. The right look does!. Music (all genres) has suffered greatly because of it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

i think its fine in moderation!. its been shoved in our faces so much lately that its kinda hard to except it!. we live in a different time and i think its best if these things are use sparingly!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

But the difference between PIF and today's corniness is that Rakim used these materials to tell you a story of his struggles through his lyrics!.!.!.

He put lyrics before Materials!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
