It is an absolutely flawless hip hop in terms of lyrics and production!. Don't spoil it by downloading more than one song, it only has 9!.

Actually, one way I think is a great way to describe it, would be like a 37 minute freestyle!. Obviously it's not freestyled cause the rhymes are just insane, but pretty much, Nas picks up the mic on NY State of Mind and doesn't stop rapping!.

After over 100 listens I still listen to it regularly, it's just that good!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

What made it so great!? It showed the hardships of the ghetto, and seemed to be a narrative of the life of an urban youth!. Nas' use of complex rhyme schemes, amazing storytelling, metaphors, clever wordplay, and use of poetry with his unique flow made it so great!. After Illmatic came out, it influenced many rappers to take their lyricism to the next level!. His multi-syllabic internal rhyming seemed to tell rappers to step it up and brought back the importance of lyricism (which I think is the most important aspect of hip-hop) to the game!. The production was killer too, some of the best producers in the game worked on the album - DJ Premier, L!.E!.S!., Pete Rock, Large Professor, and Q-Tip!.

I also can't believe these dudes haven't mentioned it yet, but definitely listen to "Represent" with Premo on the beat!. I mean, Nas in his prime + DJ Premier in his prime = perfection!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

Ilmatic shows a realness that you hardly see in hip hop anymore!. Listeners can tell that Nas was 'hungry' and the way his flow just took New York to a whole new level!. Once you put in Illmatic you're no longer in your living room/class/car or whatever, you're in early 90's New York City!. You can feel the pain, joy, frustration, paranoia and all the emotions that Nas felt when he was writing his street poetry!. Some rappers talk about being hood, hardcore, gangsta, etc, Nas didn't need to tell how, you could tell by listening to his lyrics that he was real and that he didn't need to brag to convey his message Www@Enter-QA@Com

It was a great album because at the time of it's release, it was something fresh and new from the perspective of an artist that we had never really heard from before!. The lyricism was on point, and it represented the thoughts and feelings of an entire generation!. This was a hugely influential album and really caused hip hop to step its game up!. I remember seeing the It Aint Hard to Tell video on Rap City and thinking "Damn who IS this kid!?"

My favorite songs are It Aint Hard to Tell, NY State of Mind and my MOST favorite is The World is Yours!.

if u listen to it ull realise how complex it is and Nas was just a teenager when he did it!. people have compared his lyricism to shakespeare because of this and of course it was said he was the new Rakim (which is a big achievement)
