Question: Why do you suppose the Moonlight Sonata is so popular!?
I feel that the Moonlight Sonata- 1st movement is extrtemely over-rated!. Don't get me wrong, i think it's a very nice piece, but there are so many others that i consider way better/more impressive!. e!.g the rest of the moonlight!.!. t pathetique!.!.rachmaninoff concerto's!.!. chopin nocturnes!.!.clair de lune(which is even a little overrated itself)!.!.

If the only sonata you know about that is the one you will feel is best!. These people have limited frame of reference!. Ask a classical pianist which of Beethoven's sonatas he / she likes best and it almost certainly will not be the Moonlight!. Most people who make statements or pronouncements regarding the Moonlight are not even aware that it has three movements!.
In short it is a great piece of music, but rather overexposed!.
There are many contributors here on YA classical who have in depth knowledge and will give you a much better perspective on such pieces that are elevated by people who really don't have a depth of knowledge!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The first movement of the Moonlight was unique and revolutionary for many reasons!.
1!. No Piano Sonata used triplets and inversions/voicings like the Moonlight!. No composition prior to it is comparable in that sense!.
2!. It was the first piano sonata to start with a slow movement!.
3!. The chord progression is unique!. There were other fantasias written before the moonlight but none of them incorporated such a radical chord progression!. Read the score and you will see what I mean!.

pathetique is the one for me grave is very hard to play for me on the left hand fast movementsi have only been playing piano two solid years but 50 is a bit old to study but i get not a bad sound i play the moonlight right through and i am glad of the sostenuto it gives me a time to settle back down i dont fancy the hammer clav !?!?!? to much to study little bit of f chopin Www@Enter-QA@Com

It might be the simplicity of the piece!. but I'd say the general public likes the piece because of the chord progressions!.
