Yes, it means popular!.

Pop is like a label that is applied to other genres like, pop punk or pop metal!. Pop music is basically taking the most 'ear friendly' characteristics of a genre & making it into a sub genre of it's own right!. For example, pop punk is taking punk & tweaking it (whether it be by adding catchy hooks, fun lyrics, mixing it with other genres etc!.!.!.) to be widely accessible to the mainstream audience!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

This is one of the many debates of R&P !.!.!.!.!. personally I think it used to mean popular music, but the genre has since evolved since it's beginnings!. But, that's just me!.

I also feel that there are unknown pop artists out there (unpopular pop, if you will), and bands that mix pop into their music but aren't flat out pop!.

But, just my opinion!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It can really mean either one!. However, pop music is really used to described the kind of airy teeny music you listed in the question!. When people want to talk about music that has had mainstream success, they usually say popular music!. Hope i've helped some!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

To me, there's pop music vs!. classical music!. Or you can prefix another genre with pop to show that it's a lighter, more radio friendly version!. I never use pop to mean bubblegum though, or to mean top 40 type music!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Pop is short for Pop Music!. However, I answered the difference between Rock and Pop debate in depth tonight already!.
