Question: AFTER getting a masters degree in voice!?
I'm a junior in highschool and music is the only subject I really like and am good at, so I thought I would get a degree in voice!.Maybe this is a silly question, but what kind of job could I get after I've got my degree besides becoming an opera singer!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
Its not a silly question!. I am working on a master's degree in voice performance (although I might switch to music education for different purposes)!. I received my undergraduate in vocal performance!. I have taught chorus, beginning piano, voice, and anything else related to singing along with performing opera/solo choral music professionally!.

The tricky thing about opera singing that people WILL NOT tell you, is that you don't need a master's degree in voice to sing opera!. It is who you study with, what talents you have, and what experience you have!. Most opera singers do have undergraduate degrees, but there are actually some doing very well out there that do not!. BUT these singers have been studying and grinding in the opera world for years!. These things are often equivilant to a bachelor's degree!.

Honestly, these degrees are MOSTLY for teaching purposes, and to say you can do performing if needed!. You honestly can't do much else with it!. If you don't plan on teaching, there's not much else you can do with it!. You can of course perform, but it takes YEARS AND YEARS before you can survive off of performing alone!. And the jobs aren't easy!. I've met many singers just as talented as the ones singing in the Met, but real life happened!. They got married, had kids, or just got tired of the instability that sometimes comes with operatic performing!. With singing opera, you don't get medical benefits and all those things you like to have when you get sick, etc!. These people teach in colleges, private schools, or public schools!. In public schools, you'll need certification!. You don't get that with a performance degree!.

Honestly, think long and hard about this career!. I love what I do, but it is sacrificial!. Many of my old friends aren't even working in the music profession full time!. I thank God, I'm not in that predicament currently, but it happens often!. Make sure that this is what you REALLY want to do, and that you will be willing to put up with the pitfalls that sometimes comes along with opera careers!. If you are determined and focused, it can happen!. But for most, most just fall by the wayside!. Look at the economy!. That's why so many of us are teaching!. LOL! But seriously, go for what your instincts about your career!. Your instincts are never wrong!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

You could teach voice in a school, You could be a music teacher!. You could write music!. You don't have to only sing opera schools like Berklee College of Music has a contemporary voice program!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

you could teach singing or music in general!.!.!.!. otherwise your options are limited!. it'd be a good idea to minor in something to fall back on like a business degree!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
