Question: Is Nas' It Was Written overscrutinized!?
Alot of publications just look at it as being a commercial effort on Nas' part and dismiss it!. Now while it is true that some of the beats are overly polished, I still dont consider it a full on commercial effort cause some of the songs are very dark and street oriented!. IMO this album is a classic and one of the greatest of all time in Hip Hop!. What do you guys have to say!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

WHO CARES WUT ROLLING STONES THINKS!? They have it all wrong when it comes 2 Hip Hop!. And yes It Was Written is a classic, it is thrown under da bus often cuz puttin out Illmatic has been a gift and a curse 4 Nas!. Everything he puts out is always compared 2 it, its unfair cuz nuthin will ever come close 2 it again!.!.!. Da songs that r overly polished: If I Ruled the World, Street Dreams, Affirmative Action etc!. are all good songs!. Oh, and I Gave You Power is FAR from being commercial!. This is Nas' 2nd best LP, just a step above Stillmatic IMO!. He was seen as an underground rapper after Illmatic, so fans were harder on him 4 using commercial beats than they r on Biggie, Jay Z, and 2Pac who use them regularly!.!.!. Www@Enter-QA@Com
It's definitely the start of Nas' commercialism which was even more prevalent on The Frim, I Am, and Nastradamus!.
I don't think it's over scrutinized because most hip hop fans cite it as his second best album!. And the reason it's branded as Nas' attempt to be mainstream isn't so much the beats is his change in subject matter, where all of a sudden he started rapping about selling cocaine and acting like he was a mob boss!. Which became the big trend after Only Built for Cuban Linx!.

The one thing is, that in terms of rapping skills, it's probably Nas' best album!. His flows are all pretty much perfect, the rhymes are crazy, and he's got some great creativity and storytelling!.
So for that reason the album balances out!. But I don't think it's one of the best in hip hop though!. Reasonable Doubt is better album that captures the hustler persona!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think people put the album down because of illmatic!. If not for that Album I think it would have gotten 5 mics in the source but it only got 4 and 1/2!. Actually It was Written was the first Nas Album I heard!. I Listened to illmatic in 1999!. I think it is his 4th best album he has ever done ( illmatic, Untitled, Stillmatic)!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
i completely agree!. it was written is in my top 10 albums of all time!. i dont even think its very commercial at all!. the lyrics were incredible and the beats were 2!. theres not one bad song on that cd!.

Look i am a Nas fan, but have you heard of the dark days of "IT was Written"!. It was good!.!.!.like a 6!.5/10!. No better than that!. TOo many boring songs!. Illmatic was greatness!
