The reason that you do have classic icons of the past like Clapton and Dylan is because at that time there weren't that many bands to choose from!. Today for every band you have heard of there is a 1000+ you haven't, the amount of music out today is astounding! So it's going to be much harder to come up with a classic icon in the classic sense!.
If you can't find great music in this day and age you're not looking hard enough! The PC/internet is the greatest tool ever created for those of us who do like to search for new and great music!.

I think Today's music is just as good, if not better than years ago, there's just a lot more of it now, so it's harder to find!.
I suppose it all depends on what Genre you prefer, I mostly listen to Pop/Rock and Country!.
So on the Pop front, Girls Aloud, yeah they might not be that talented but they make consistently good pop songs that are just as catchy as pop songs in the 60's 70's!.
Rock/Alternative, Jack's Mannequin, I think what they're doing is amazing, basically, Coldplay are a poor mans JM, but the lead singer isn't married to a famous movie star and a child named after a fruit!.!.!.!
Country, Miranda Lambert/Taylor Swift, they really show up these child stars as they write their own music, play their own music and it's a whlole lot better!Www@Enter-QA@Com

i think that music today have become overly sensualist and shallow!. the lyrics to many songs of this time are just pointless jargon with no depth or meaning to them!. Fast cars, fast women and making fast cash are typical themes seen today!.

I like it!. People on here are too trapped in the past and view anything post 1990 as being bad!. I personally can't stand this music from the older days, like Beatles, Who, Doors, all that other music!. I think it is accepted as good because it is socially cool to do so, its like saying one drinks fine wine with dinner or a sign of sophistication!.
I'd advise some artists but my taste in music seems to only irritate people here!. But whatever: Emigrate, have a look at them!. Sort of hard rock with some mellow elements in it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

this is a very big question and it's need long long answer!!! because i like multicolor music style:
in heavy metal music: heavy metal now have some new brith since 1998 with all those female sopranos, and using the symphonic classical, and the new power metal music!.
but what is the new nobody knows!?
in blues: gone since the 60's over!!!!
soul: sone since the 70's over!!!
disco: gone since the 70's over!!!
folk: gone since the 60's over!!!
country and blue grass: i think there is a good chance becuase all these pure sweet girls around (the dixie chicks and mary chipen carpinter and others)!.
jazz: mmmmm i know everybody will say if the great frank sinatra and miles dives is dead so jazz is dead!. but we know it's wrong!!!
jazz players and new singers are everywhere in the world JAZZ is reborn again!!!
mandarine music (chinese-taiwanese): nobody can sing more sweet more pure more real same as the great TERESA TENG 1953-1996!. but there is long list of new singers out there!. (god bless chinese music)!.

If you want to listen to the actually good music of this generation you need to listen to indie!. Its untainted by the media and record labels so it has evolved as the artists have seen fit!. Some good bands include The Kooks, Arctic Monkeys, MGMT, The Strokes and The Kaiser Chiefs!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
The White Stripes, Radiohead (my favorite band), R!.E!.M!., and Oasis are as good as the best bands of the '60s and '70s!.

I think Rap and Hip-hop is terrible, it takes no talent to produce!.
