Start with their album American Beauty!. You can also get albums like Skeletons from the Closet!.
The Grateful Dead are definitely at their best when they performed concerts!. On nugs!.net and archive!.org you can get tons of FREE live grateful dead shows from 1968-1995 (possibly up to 66')!. also there are the Dick's Picks series which are 36 Volumes, each volume being a different recording of a show!. These are usually like $20 each or more and I am slightly ashamed to say that I have them all!. But anyways start with their studio classics and work your way up to live albums, live shows, etc!.
