The phrase "empty nest" almost always means your parent's home without kids in it!. Sometimes these "birds" try to take away the joys and accomplishments of their grown kids because they may feel threatened by them!. My folks are like that sometimes!. Their old and bitter about how crappy their lives went so when their kids do something extraordinary they try to "steal" the fire from his heart!. Not out of cruelty or vindictiveness, just because they feel kinda useless now!.
They are "strung from" their sad empty lives together!. Now that the kids have their own lives, the nest doesn't seem as strong and full as it once did!. They're barely hanging on!.

I think that the first two lines mean that the birds that were stealing are now hung from an empty nest- like they are all dead!. I feel that my answer only states the obvious meaning!.!.!.are you looking for a deeper explanation, like maybe the artist is using the lyrics as a metaphor to something else!? Www@Enter-QA@Com
