What is Neil Young talking about in his song 'Powderfinger'?!

Question: What is Neil Young talking about in his song 'Powderfinger'!?
Answers:
I took it to be during the Civil War and Confederates were coming up the river (red legs) (Red means run, son)!. A young guy is at home, not fighting in the war and is left to defend his home!. He sees the shot coming, he gets shot!. He fires off a shot, but the gun either backfires or he just is too slow and his face splashes up in the sky and he is dead!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think it's about some kind of war or rebellion!. The father is gone, the brother is not there, so he big powers that be left him (fate, perhaps!?) to protect his home!.
Perhaps a young kid, during the civil war!. In the lines "And I just turned twenty-two I was wonderin' what to do And the closer they got, The more those feelings grew"!.!.!. he is unsure as if to fire the shotgun or not, and during the time it took for him to fire the gun, he was killed!.

Think of me as one you'd never figured
Would fade away so young
With so much left undone
Remember me to my love,
I know I'll miss her!.

That verse sounds like a farewell, he was killed too young!. At least that is what i get!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
