He's saying that she never cried in front of him!. He means a few things:
- He didn't realise their relationship was going belly-up!. He thinks maybe if she'd shown some more emotion and cried, he might have known and might have fixed it!. But he's not sure if he would have!.
- He's wondering what their relationship was missing, that the new one obviously has, that meant she never cried in front of him!. Maybe he never gave her cause for happy tears, only for sad ones!. And maybe she didn't feel comfortable showing him her tears!.
I guess he's exploring the paradox of communication in a relationship: you have to have trust and understanding for good communication, but you have to have good communication to have trust and understanding!.
