I like it!.!.!. you keep it short and sweet (line-wise, I mean) which makes it easier to put melodies to!. And you rhyme!. God, some of the people here are so inanely set on not having any structure or rhyming, then calling it a song!.!.!. it's like!.!.!. hey, if it's metal, sure, whatever, but if it's not, how are you going to write a song without any structure!?

Okay, ranting aside, there's no tried and true way for finding great melodies!. A lot of it is leading by ear!.!.!. the tricks come in knowing where to lead your ear, and helping your ear know what to expect!.

One way to create a melody is to start playing chords, and see what happens!. Helps if you play the right ones, though!.!.!. briefly, using Nashville numbering, (assume a chord is major unless it says otherwise!.!.!. m = minor)

1 is the root, and can go anywhere
4 can go to 1 or 5
5 almost always goes back to 1

the second part is

6m can substitute for 1
2m can substitute for 4
3m can substitute for 5

The most basic progression is 1 - 4 - 5 - 1 (the one four five)

Let's say we're in the key of C

1-4-5-1 = C F G C

Let's switch it up a bit

1-5-6m-4 = C G Am F

1 went to 5 right away, but 5 went to the 1 substitute, which then went to 4, which easily goes back to 1!. This is a classic pop progression, I can't count how many pop punk songs I've heard with it!.

The simplest progression for our purposes is 1-6m!. Great to sing over and to play around with!. Try jamming on this one for a while when you sing!.

I'll admit, I started coming up with a melody in my head!. I could hear it pretty clearly, so I pulled out the guitar and started messing around to see if I could bring it out!.!.!.!.

In key of C (transposed from G)

C F-E D E G A G
Do Yo-u love me !.!.!. Are You Mine!?

F C D-C B-C G E-D C
Can I have you !.!.!. Are You Blind!?

I was expirimenting with a few different ways to phrase this melody, when I realized that the one that sounded the way I was hearing it was the one where the first line started with a C, then a G, then an F, then a G!. That's a classic chord progression, a 1-5-4-5!.

Knowing your scales, ie, the notes you have to work with in a certain key, can help guide you along the way!. All of those syllables with more than one note above them, that's basically just expressive stuff, but that slide between the notes makes a very nice sound, it adds to the melody!. Ornamentation, they call it!. Don't ornament past your ability to sing, and usually you want to ornament within the key (thus knowing your chords, notes, and scales), but it's definitely one part in writing a good melody!.

Well, that's about all I've got at this point, if you have any specific questions feel free to email me, maybe I can offer more advice or a helpful critique or something!.

Either way, good luck, and keep writing!
